Populist attitudes in Latin America. The South Pacific case

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Little is known about the characteristics and reasons that explain the presence of populist attitudes among citizens, particularly in Latin America. The project seeks to identify which social and political attitudes are linked to populist attitudes, as well as the types of populism that can be identified in three countries on the South Pacific coast of Latin America where some studies have identified that is where populist citizen attitudes are predominant. 3,800 surveys were applied in three countries (Chile, n = 1,219; Colombia, n = 1,299; and Peru, n = 1,282). The results allow us to identify that pluralism, relative deprivation, political distrust, willingness to change and the distance between support and satisfaction with the democratic system (the democratic deficit) are important in the development of populist attitudes. An analysis of types of populism is also made, looking at the relationship between populist attitudes and ideological self-perception.
