Impact of the news on Peruvian socio-environmental conflicts on YouTube's digital communities

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

There is consensus that the prominence of digital media and social networks increases in settings of high conflict. However, it has also been argued that there is still a divorce between the news agenda and what citizens think about socio-environmental conflicts, which represent 41% of the crises that occur in Peru. This research analyzes the impact of these news on the public agenda based on the observation of YouTube news channels and the reactions they generate in Internet users. Their interactions and the relationships they establish from these publications, the actions they take, who and what they talk about, as well as their positions and tones in front of the news coverage will be observed. It seeks to revalue the contribution of the YouTube community in the debate of local conflict, considering that it is the second search engine in the world after Google and the third most popular social network in the country.
