Water treatment consists of the removal of undesirable components to raise the quality of the water to the level necessary for the use it is intended to give. For example, drinking water has the highest quality because it is consumed directly by people, while wastewater, which is treated for discharge into a receiving body (as in rivers and lagoons), does not require such high quality standards because they are not produced for drinking. The treated wastewater must comply with the maximum permissible limits established by law for each economic activity, for example, mining-metallurgical, tannery, brewery, among others. These standards are contemplated so that when the water is discharged, the quality of the bodies of water that receive it is preserved.
