Self-report instruments are a popular method to operationalize latent variables. Although it is possible to work using various item formats, many of them use politomics, as it produces more variance than the dichotomous. The present work contemplates the production of clear guides, which allow selecting the required sample size to perform an exploratory factor analysis, considering the effect of the number of items per latent variable and the number of these on the sample size needed to recover from Efficiently, the population parameters of instruments made up of politomic items. Through this research a statistical basis will be achieved to define the sample size, which may be applied in future psychometric research work, to encourage good practices in the use of factor analysis.
