Abstract
This thematic issue illustrates the growing importance of media audiences in communication studies. To a large extent, the emergence of socio-digital devices was one of the factors responsible for the renewed academic and political interest in the public, that “illustrious unknown” (Méadel, 2004) of the communicative process. Social networks will not only change the way information is consumed, but will also become important instruments of participation in public debate. But, although this topic is now part of our research agenda, several aspects of the profile of the public, their habits and the senses, as well as the uses they attribute to media content, are still little investigated today. As guest editors, we hope this Contracttext dossier will serve as a starting point for much more research on the subject.
