The human dimension in journalistic coverage, of the consequences, of the earthquakes that occurred in Peru (2007) and Ecuador (2016)

This article analyzes the degree of involvement and ethical dilemmas faced by journalists of reference media in Peru and Ecuador in the coverage of the earthquakes in 2007 and 2016, respectively. The methodology used is of a qualitative type, based on semi-structured interviews with the special media envoys and the analysis of the information products that are published when the crisis broke out. Then, this news is submitted to the scrutiny of a focus group composed of professionals and students of Communication, to gather their reactions on the quality, commitment and sensitivity of the texts. It was found that human drama not only highlights the virtues and weaknesses of the press, but also impacts the subjectivity of the journalist and may allow closer coverage of catastrophes.
En este artículo se analiza el grado de involucramiento y los dilemas éticos que afrontaron los periodistas de medios de comunicación de referencia del Perú y Ecuador en la cobertura de los terremotos del 2007 y 2016, respectivamente. La metodología utilizada es de tipo cualitativa, basada en entrevistas semiestructuradas a los enviados especiales de los medios y en el análisis de los productos informativos que publicaron cuando estalló la crisis. Luego, estas noticias se sometieron al escrutinio de un focus group integrado por profesionales y estudiantes de Comunicación, para recoger sus reacciones sobre la calidad, compromiso y sensibilidad de los textos. Se halló que el drama humano no solo pone en evidencias las virtudes y las debilidades de la prensa, sino que impacta en la subjetividad del periodista y puede permitir una cobertura más cercana de las catástrofes.
